Recently, someone asked me “when is a good time to buy?”
I thought about that for a second, because, let’s face it… as a Real Estate Agent, it is in my best short-term financial interests to say “now-now-now!”
The truth is, however, that my short term interest is not necessarily in my client’s long term best interest, so I had to give it some serious thought. The best answer that I could come up with is: “When you are ready to buy a home, then it is the best time for you to buy a home.
I know that sounds a little bit existential… sort of like, “if you build it they will come.” But it is the truth that only you can decide when the right time for you to buy is.
Now, if you are looking for advice on when is the best time to buy, before the market goes back up, then I would say: “Anyone who tells you that they know what the market is going to do tomorrow, is a loon… or is being less than completely honest with you.” There is no telling when the market will come back. But I can promise you this… it will come back.
In the long run, there is always one of two things that we can count on in any market… and that is, the market will either go up, or the market will come down. Right now, we are at (or very near) the bottom of a long, dark and desperate trench that the Real Estate market hasn’t seen in quite some time. However, according to sources such as the Wall Street Journal as recently as May 29th, the housing picture in California has been on the rise (in single digits) since April.
So, I tell my clients this. Don’t be afraid of the market. If you are ready to buy, then now is a great time to buy. If you are ready to think about buying, then now is a great time to look.
Don’t let an agent push you, prod you or otherwise put the pressure on you to buy. Only you can decide when… and we can help you when you are ready.
